I have Apple's Java installed. That bug is not the problem and was fixed in LibreOffice. However the latest comments on that report lead to a new bug https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101057 which is the cause of my problem.
This was fixed in the master source repository and a backport fix applied to the code for the upcoming 5.2.1 release.
