notorious for offering additional software, to the point that people

SilverLight and security are mutually incompatible.
Just please reassure me I will get ample warnings and explanations of any extras.
With a good selection of anti-malware tools installed, you will receive
ample warnings, and explanations.
However, the most reliable way to ensure that malware is not installed
in the first place, is for the computer to not be connected to any other
computers. Do all required data transfers via CD/DVD.
