I don't think you can do this: text inserted by typing always assumes 
the characteristics of surrounding text. If it didn't, editing any 
document would be a nightmare!

My best recommendation would be to create a character style with the 
properties you need. If you then keep the Styles and Formatting 
window open, you can:
o position the cursor where you wish to type,
o double-click the style name in the Styles and Formatting window, and
o type.
