Ahh, yeh.  The check for updates is probably checking the repos of your
distro then or not really checking at all!  Sorry about that!  It does work
if you do get the version from your package manager but i only do that on
machines that are difficult for me to reach.

My LO is always downloaded from the LO site, not the kubuntu packages. I'm
currently running When I check for updates via Help > Check for
updates, I'm told that "LibreOffice 4.2 is up to date."

That 4.2.3 is out and available is news to me. I'm downloading it right
