Hi :)
The "Ctrl Click" message usually appears as a tool-tip when you hover the mouse arrow over the 
link.  Have you switched off tool-tips?

That solved the issue!
I understand the security measure, and that it needs to be consistent in all
LO applications, but unfortunately it didn't show a message to Ctrl-click a
hyperlink, hence the confusion.
