I like the bits that say 

"... [show rest of quote]"

so that you can click on them to see the rest of the remaining thread if you want to.  Of course 
you can easily read all the comments from top-posters with ease.

Top post, bottom post, interspersed --- it is all pretty much the same in the end for delivering 
and exchanging information. 

But what REALLY makes a difference in effort for recipients and for following the thread is simply 
trimming the response--by hand, or allowing your favorite news reader or email client to do it.

The need is especially notable if you review threads on Nabble archive--this thread for example:
