I have a spreadsheet to record financial transactions, and to save typing,

Any ideas?
Usually when are typing in a spreadsheet, Calc will suggest a word
based upon what you have typed in one of the cells before So, I'm not
sure you need a drop down list.
Also a simple database for your expenses will do what you want
including the use of drop down lists.
