4.0.0.x should not be rolled out before Feb 4th. BUT, if testers and the developers can fix more within the RC1 and RC2, then there will less for fixing for the 4.0.1 version.

As for OSs, there needs to be a lot more, a lot of different OS and system setups than before, if we want to really do a "big" testing and "fix" session.

Windows
XP, Vista, Win7 and Win8
Touch systems for Windows

Linux
Ubuntu and 2 other, different ".deb" mainstream OS packages
3 or more different ".rpm" installed package OSs

MacOSX
PPC
Intel

I do not know about Mac, but we need as many different configurations for Windows and Linux as we can. I do remember something about problems with Netbooks in the past due to their "weird" screen size and aspect ratio. Then there is the new touch needs with the newest Win8 systems.

How much smaller it the total install of LO vs. the space needed to install Word '13 and Excel '13 [or 2010, or 2007] ? These new touch laptops/netbooks/convertables may have much less resources than a typical laptop. So install size might be worth looking into for marketing towards these systems.

ALSO
maybe we can do something to the download system that does not default to 4.0.0.x over the 3.6.5 version. Give the choice upfront and not the relatively smaller text for change of system or version than the" big green buttons". Since it is no longer a 3.6.x to 3.7.x change, but a 3.6.x to 4.0.0 change, it needs to be well thought out on how it is presented. It the 4.0.0 going to be stating "for early adopters" like the graph has stated all this time on the "Release Plan" page? [the graph still shows 3.7] We do not want new users to be defaulted to 4.0.0.x if there are any issues that would turn them off, that would not be there within the 3.6.5 version. We do not need any "bad press" with a "major" version change that this will look like to new users.

I may be blowing smoke asking this, but it would be better than defaulting to 4.0.0.x for all users, if the new users could try 3.6.5 before trying a "#.0.0" version.

"Ultra-Stable" is now wording we want to avoid, since it could be "ultra-stable" for most but there can be "almost show-stopper" issues that do not affect the "stability".

Hi :)
I am really impressed that people are already taking part. Nicely done Paolo! It should be fun
and will be good. Lets try to get the 4.0.0 ultra stable earlier in it's cycle so we can use and
roll it out sooner. I hope to test-drive it a bit on 3 different types of machines and on 3
different OSes.

I recommend making a back-up copy of your user-profile. Copy&paste is a good way to do that.

I think i'm going to do straight installs wiping out the current versions of LO on those machines.
After testing i can reinstall the older version that everyone in the office is on and copy back the
old user-profiles. If you can do a parallel install instead then that would probably be a much
better way.

Good luck and happy hunting all!

Tom :)

i think everything is working well at the moment. i have found very
marginal problems with LO until now. i just suggested time ago that LO
should include an automatic crash report (such as ms office, firefox and
other software), which can be enabled or disabled by the user in the
software settings (or which asks every time: do you want to send this
information?) and which should send in a database some information (eg
operating system, software version, type of document, type of operation and
so on) every time it notices a crash in the software (for example in my
case LO crashed more times trying to open .docx documents). This could
make much easier to compile lists of bugs and issues.

I'll bring this up during QA call to see if it's been discussed. Thanks for
the suggestion :)

Joel

I think an office suite should be stable.

So, I think to emphasize the importance of quality assurance is vital.

May I suggest adding a step checking if the office suite starts properly?

LibreOffice should support most hardware and software configurations.

If it does not start in one case, please postpone and stop the release.
I'm one of the people really involved with QA and trust me, we do an
abundant amount of testing on every release before and during
production/patching. Just for an idea, we have an entire week being
dedicated to LibO 4 testing:

we're always looking for more help to test stuff from our user community,
please get involved this week if you have a couple hours.
