My own personal recommendation is to move to  a branch once it has reached .4 in the third figure.  
So at the moment that is 3.5.x but by December 9th it will be 3.6.4 wont it?  The higher the number 
in that 3rd figure the more stable and less work it's likely to need.  



However  my personal recommendation doesn't suit everyone and no-one should try to force everyone 
else to comply with their personal ideas.  So, watch "The Life of Brian" and make up your own mind. 
 


When the new branch is 1st released there is a leap forwards in compatibility with MS formats and 
tons new features have been added.  Also it's unlikely that people will find any problems or 
instabilities or anything like that because the release has undergone widespread QA testing.  So, 
it's well worth testing the newest branch's newest release on at least 1 machine.  


If you are one of the rare unlucky people that finds a problem then you can easily go back to the 
older branch's newest release.  At the moment that is probably the 3.5.7, or any of the older 
branch's release past the .4 in the 3rd figure, so at the moment that would be anything from 3.5.4. 
to 3.5.7.  But going back to the previous branch means you miss out on some of the new toys, 
improved compatibility and other stuff.  So, many people will stick with the newer branch, even if 
they have found a problem, because it's NOT likely to be "a blocker" for them.  


So, what i will soon be doing is upgrading all the machines of all my colleagues to 3.6.4 and just 
leave them on that because i have complete confidence in it.  On my own machine i will be trying 
new and old things when i have time to play around but will make sure i can always reach a machine 
that has 3.6.4 on it when i need to get something done in a hurry.
