Congrats (if you really have solved it)! :)  

Lots of people have been moving away from Ubuntu and Fedora is a good choice.  There are quite a 
lot of good choices.  Most people have probably moved to  another distro in the same family so that 
they already know how to do most things but that way they don't increase their skills and knowledge 
so much.  Moving to another family is a bit more hard work but you gain a lot from it.  


If you haven't completely solved the problem then please do ask again, or if there is a new 
question now then please ask in a fresh new email to the list.  Most people on the list are 
volunteers that are here for 2 main reasons
1.  They like to solve puzzles and being here is more fun than  just doing a crossword puzzle

2.  To learn more about LO and learn new techniques or skills or work-flow 

My approach is to try to do both at the same time.  By giving questions and working with the person 
to try to inspire, or nudge them into being able to solve that problem and maybe others that may 
arise later.  My way depends on the person telling us what they have tried and what results they 
got from that.  It's not so important to do exactly as i say.  


There are other people on the list that have gained expertise in one area or another and so are 
able to answer questions directly.  


So, feel free to ask because it's what we are here for.

hi tom,

Fodera is the only OS I use now. I went for another internet connection and installed last update 
and tried to reinstall the LO from Add/Remove software and in somehow its working now...

Arrgh.  So it's still not working :(

Don't worry about bothering us.  That is what we are here for.  


So, when you installed Fedora did you install on the same machine as your Ubuntu?  Did you 
install over the top of Ubuntu or was it a new partition?  Can you still boot into Ubuntu?  


Is your internet connection able to deal with updates now?  If so then in Fedora can you force 
PackageKit (or whatever you use as a package-manager) to look for all updates for everything?  
There should (hopefully) be a button somewhere saying "Updates".  I think you can install 
Synaptic Package Manager which might be more familiar and easier for you to use.  A couple of 
years ago they made it able to deal with rpms as well as debs (depending on which distro you 
install synaptic into, it picks up the right one to use).  So, old timers still worry about 
using synaptic for Rpm distros but it's fine now.

There is a drop-down at the top left to change to a better language for you.  At the moment it's 
set on English which seems fine but you can change if you like.  

Fedora 17 should have LibreOffice 3.5.2 installed by default and that should be a reasonably 
good version to use.  Do you still have the Fedora Cd?  Do you have enough space on your 
hard-drive to do an extra install to experiment?  Alternatively you might have more success 
using the Fedora Cd as a "LiveCd".  


Live Cd means just boot up straight from the Cd and avoid installing.  It should get you to a 
usable desktop with LO (3.5.2) ready to use.  LiveCd is a bit slower than a proper hard-drive 
install but it's a good way to get a working system up&running quickly.  Just avoid configuring 
it or installing extra programs, just use it as is.  Also if you save stuff make sure it's to 
your network-fileshares or proper hard-drive and NOT "Documents" (or Desktop, or whatever) 
inside the Live Cd session.  The local files vanish when you take the Cd out or reboot.  Ones on 
your hard-drive are still there of course.

I install fedora 17 lately (I didn't had internet when I installed it). I used to work over 
ubuntu and LO works fine.
and I install the files from LO official website

then I run 'yum install '*.rpm' (apart from desktop files) in terminal and received "install 
completed"
the LO Icons shown in app. menu but nothing works.

I have to submit my final report of Co-Operative program to my instructor within 10 days and 
prepare my presentation too.

LibreOffice should work fine without java.  Sorry i only just now found your 1st email today.  



So, your OS is Fedora.  Does LibreOffice work well enough without the desktop integration 
packages?  I think that is the first thing to check.  Then you can try again with the 
freedesktop-menus if you haven't already got that working by now.  (Sorry i know you probably 
haven't been able to work at this today as it's Friday)

I install the file three time. it contains the RPMS folder with

 54 items (.rpm) and it runs OK

the subfolder desktop-integration - I thought it has something to do with the installing but 
it seems not - contains
-freedesktop-menus
-mandriva-menus
-suse-menus
the redhat-menus not there - which is for fedora dist.

however, I re-install the files again, it is exactly the same as what I already installed and 
the program still not working.

I wonder if the java components have anything to do with that ( I just install them lately ) 
I'll try to uninstall it and re-install it again..
