Hmm, perhaps try downloading one of the spell-checker Extensions and install by 

Tools - "Extension Manager" - Add


Any of them should sort your problem but the best is the NA Dvd Project ones from what other people 
have been saying.  Also there is Calligra which looks a lot nicer than my previous suggestions.  
It's a whole Office Suite rather than just a Word replacement so it's a bit heavier to download.
