Ubuntu 12.04
LibreOffice 3.5.6.2 (installed using the debs available at
http://www.libreoffice.org/ -- the Ubuntu repository version of
LibreOffice were carefully uninstalled before doing this).
Bug in LibreOffice or in my operating system?
Is anyone else seeing this?

I am not sure that I know what is happening in your system. I use
Ubuntu that is also Debian based with all my LO versions (3.4.6, 3.5.6
[soon 3.5.7], and 3.6.2) downloaded from the LibreOffice website like you.
When I open LO using Calc, all I see in the title bar is "Untitled
1 - LibreOffice Calc". I get the same result if I use scalc
(/opt/LIbreOffice3.5/program/scalc) to open LO.
