Ahhh, great. If it's fixed then the most important issue has been dealt with. Everything else is
secondary to that imo. It's nice to have a quick&simple way of solving future issues.

rm -rf ../user/ worked to clear out the cruft.
Now, please remind me what I need to do to change the opening display from
that pictograph dialog to a blank page.
