Alex:
You have obviously done a mail merge on LibreOffice before using e-mail.
Have you tried sending merged e-mails such that LibreOffice mail merge is
used to compose the /body/ of the message? The only way I know to do that is
by using the Mail Merge Wizard. The wizard does not launch an e-mail client.
But then again, JavaMail is not an e-mail client. It is an API written in
Java.
The server settings that LO uses to send the mail are configured in Options
LibreOffice Writer >> E-mail. You would ideally go about setting the SMTP
server in the same way you would do it in a full e-mail client. However,
this component does not run as smoothly as it does in Apple Mail or
Thunderbird. This script at least at one point invoked the JavaMail API.
