Hi :)
No need to delete anything (i think) just add to what you have.

Using 2 machines is a perfect way to start.  Win7 and Fedora are good choices.  Have you managed to
network them together to share files or do you just copy them over using usb-sticks and cds? At a
guess Fedora runs much faster than Vista on that machine!

Some useful places to get help with most issues are
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/
and
http://ww.linuxquestions.org
DistroWatch is a good place to go once you have settled with Fedora for a while and fancy doing a
bit of "distro hopping"
http://distrowatch.com/
The move from Fedora or any other Gnu&Linux to any other is usually less hassle than a move from
say Vista to Win7.  The basic idea of using a package manager to look for, install, update and
remove software (instead of charging around the internet looking for malware) is roughly the same.

Base is a lot more complex than Writer, just as Access is more complex then Word.  An added
complexity is that it is possible and usually advantageous to use a separate 'back-end' for the
data that is in the table.  I don't think you really need to worry about this at first.  Stick with
what you have unless Andreas or Alex give a good idea of how to move it.

The 'front-end' that you see on the screen looks quite a bit different from Access at first but
it's worth getting used to.  It might be worth having a copy of the Access database open on the
Windows machine so you can see roughly how you want to design the new Forms and Reports.  It might
also help with trying to set-up the Queries if you want to avoid the whole Sql plan and just stick
with nice gui point&click.  I tend to prefer point&click if at all possible.

Regards from
Tom :)

Hi Chaim,

Rather then 'edit' use 'Edit in SQL View' to open the query definition,
this will bypass the problem.
_additionally_
If you designate the query definition as 'SQL Direct' this will have the
effect, for this particular query def, of always opening for edit in SQL
view.

Hi

At this stage, I have two computers, a new one running Windows 7 and the old
one that ran Vista. After buying a new computer, I erased the Vista from the
old one and installed Fedora 15.

I have a database designed specifically for fountain pen collectors on the
Windows computer, but decided to set up something  using LibreOffice with
different fields and a different emphasis.

I used the Open Office writer under Windows but this is the first time that
I tried the database program. I would be quite happy to erase my first
attempt and try again. Its the only way to learn.

My command of Linux is still poor, but I have learnt a lot so far and still
have plenty to learn

Many thanks

Hi :)
Is this a 1st attempt at moving away from Windows and MS Office at the same
time?

If the database was an Access database then the Queries, Forms and Reports
don't translate easily and need to be re-created.  The data in the Tables
should be Ok and any relationships between the tables is likely to be ok (i
would check that).

You might be able to translate the Queries by going back into Access and
view them as Sql statements and then copy&paste those into notepad and from
there into Base.  Access's Sql is quirky so it might be better to just
re-create the Queries from scratch.

Moving away from Windows does kinda force you into leaving MS Office
but it's often a good idea to stay in Windows a bit longer and just get
used to the programs first before migrating.  LibreOffice is a crucial
part of that, along with Firefox/Opera/Chrome instead of IE and
Thunderbird/Evolution/Claws for emailing.

A lot of programs written
for Windows do work in Gnu&Linux using Wine (Wine Is Not an
Emulator (it uses a more sophisticated approach)) but MS Office,
Outlook (and Outlook Express) and Internet Explorer are 3 that don't work
well.

Hi all

I set up Fedora 15 on my second computer and the Libre Office is
included.

As a fountain pen collector, I started building a database for my
collection. I defined the fields and built a table. I started filling the
table, but wanted to add an extra field. To my surprise, the structure of
the db had disappeared. The table works. I can add items and alphabetize.

Can one go back and rebuild the db structure from the table and if so how
does one do it?

Right click on the table and select edit and you will see the table
design. Make your changes, adding new columns should not cause any
problems with data integrity and save. When open the database for data
entry you will see the new column.

Thanks

Chaim
