I want the columns to each be the same width (the width of the
selected columns divided by the number of selected columns).
I found this:

  Space Columns Equally

Adjusts the width of the selected columns to match the width of the
widest column in the selection. The total width of the table cannot
exceed the width of the page
but it is not what I want.

I can merge all the cells into one column and then split the one
column into equal parts or I can manually set the column widths but
each of those methods has drawbacks.

Clicking on upper-left corner, all cells and rows are selected,
right-click on a column head and set column width.

I was going suggest clicking on the upper-left corner and then on
FORMAT>>COLUMN>>WIDTH entering the width desired.
