I tried pasting the material again, same result, and also pasting the material from vi(m).
How do I get it to let me write the letter below the columns?

Hi.
I am taking a stab here because of incomplete information. You have
probably changed your page format to 3 columns.
If you leave the page as 1 column then Insert>Section and pick 3 columns
you will get a section of 3 columns within your normal page. Paste your
addresses into this section.
