Duplicates add to the original reports just as a good comment would.  

Triaging to link reports together appropriately is a really good thing to do and 
it's a good way into project, to begin understanding devs and coding issues.  
There is not always time to hunt through bug-reports to see if there is already 
a similar one.  Anyway it can be difficult for a non-dev to know whether a 
slightly different thing is related or not.  It's much better to have a 
duplicate report than miss out on knowing a problem exists.  


There is seldom time to do things exactly the right perfect way first time but 
there are often opportunities to build on what was done first time.

I seem to recall that this is already in bugzilla somewhere, and the
problem is not just limited to OSX. Haven't got time to check just now,
but you may find your bug entry gets closed as a duplicate.
