Hi :) Sorry i haven't been able to help. I don't really know how to fix it when the spelling checker doesn't work. Chapter 2 of the "Getting Started Guide" http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation page 23 is "Choosing Language Settings". Apparently it is also worth seeing the Writer Guide's Chapter 7 "Working with Styles" although i couldn't find what i was looking for there.
