We have that here in NZ too.
What I do is to install the English GB language pack (may be that is
already there in windows).
I go into options (preferences) under language settings>languages and
set the default language for documents to English GB. It needs to be an
English with a ABC tick next to it.
If you have already a document with no spell checking, select all the
text and from the menu Format>character>Font tab make sure the language
selected has an ABC tick next to it.
It should now spell check.
