I have a question regarding the data labels feature in a Calc XY
(Scatter) chart. I have a chart with two data series plotted, each
originating from a different sheet, with the chart saved on a sheet of
its own. In order to identify each of the data points once the plot had
been printed, I wanted to show a data label for each data point, which I
figured out could be done by enabling the "Show categories" option in
the Data Labels formatting dialog. When I go to select which cells give
the data labels, though, I find that the range selected for the data
labels applies globally to every data series rather than on a per-data
series basis.

What I want to do is select a range of cells for each data series
independently of one another. Is this possible?

No, that is not possible.

Do you really need a label for each data point?

If you only want to identify whether a point belongs to the one or to the other series, you can do it via the style of the point or via the legend entry. And you can insert an additional text box into the chart.

Kind regards
Regina

Yes, I do want data labels for each point. I'm working with some scientific data which has been filtered in two different manners, so each data series corresponds to a different filtering method. These two broad ranges are identified in the key through their different color and different shaped markers. Within the larger data set (where the data is being filtered from), each row has an integer identifier that we use to track the data across multiple programs/data sets (e.g. this spreadsheet, folders holding related PDFs, tab dividers in a printed binder, etc).

Since the plot only contains between 15-30 data points (and I'm filling an entire sheet of paper for the plot), there is plenty of room to show a label for every data point. My current work-around is to copy the chart N times (where N is the number of data series I have plotted; in my case, N=2). Then for each of the charts, I add the data labels for just one of the data series at a time; the idea is then that the N consecutive pages (once printed or exported to a PDF) constitute all of the information I wanted on just that one single graph.

I was going to add a feature-request bug, but I found that this already exists (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38760). From the interface used to specify the data labels, it definitely gives the impression that the data labels are a per-series rather than per-chart property. This confusion should probably be fixed, and my vote would obviously go to allowing it to be a per-series property.

Thanks,
Justin
