You can have as many different programs that do the same thing as you want.
What I think you meant to say is you can only have one program
*associated* with any one *filetype* at a time.
I've been using OOo (now LibO) and Microsoft Office installed side by
side for years with zero problems. You just need to know how to manage
these things.
Install MSO first, then install LibO *without* changing the MSO file
associations.
