H Simon,
So back to my original question, what file types can Base actually
access and manipulate, and how?
It used to be in the included OOo help, but I haven't looked recently,
so can't say whether it is still there. As far as I can recall, it only
supported dBase III, and possibly dBase IV.
Some FP files were accessible, as were some Borland Paradox files.
No binary field support as far as I recall either.
To be read by LibO, the filenames have to be lower case (according to
the help).
