I thought it was number of messages.  When Florian said it was the number of subscribers it made a 
lot more sense :)

You ignore digest subscribers and nomail subscribers. And those that
have no subscription at all but follow the lists via other means.
(nttp gateways, webfrontends) without having subscribed yet.
