I'm fairly sure that the mailing address sends with an envelope
sender of "something@lists.freedesktop.org"; I thus expect that the
DMARC checks happen on the lists.freedesktop.org policy, not on the
yahoo.XX policy.

Wrong.If dmarc checks could be circumvented that easily, it would
turn DMARC pretty pointless (i.e. completely non-functional).

Oh, the checks are on the header field, not on the envelope sender?
Then indeed, that's saying "mailing lists must die".
