Nah, your description very much sounds like <https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=695925> "GUINT32/64_SWAP_LE_BE macros do not enclose val argument in parentheses," the fix for which Ubuntu only applied very recently IIRC.

(I assume the 4.0.4 you installed was the generic <http://www.libreoffice.org/download> one, not one provided by Ubuntu? In which case it would be clear why the bug disappeared then---the generic build uses a different software stack to access Samba files than the distro builds do, and that other stack is not affected by the issue mentioned above.)
