does anything special need to be done when changing/adding UI strings, or is
that stuff done automagically nowadays?
Your description is redundant, the extension name is almost the same,
see <display-name> in description.xml. Feel free to add a longer
description, but you need to refer to its file in description.xml. You
can freely add of change UI strings until the string freeze
(2011-12-19 for 3.5).
