I tested the search api and it works, though it doesnt provide alink to the downloadable template and there is only 1 template on the site.

FYI: the extensions part of the site got already an event message tool that could send emails with information about new extension releases. This could be used to implement an update service for extensions in LibreOffice.
If an update system would need to be implemented, i believe using the search api would be sufficient.
