No, the thumbnail views implemented on the Start Center (SC) are designed as
an efficient way to get a graphical representation of recently used
documents, and to make better use of the wide screen real estate.  GUI and
keyboard manipulation of thumbnails presented on the SC is evolving.

There is an enhancement request  fdo#77590
<https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77590>   to have the SC reopen
as a window.  At that  point, it might  be reasonable to be able to toggle
off the thumbnail views for recently used documents.

Otherwise, if electing  to eliminate the thumbnails, the recently used
document list can simply be cleared.

Hardly,  with wide screen and multiple monitor systems in common use, having
multiple Windows is rather more productive.  Movement between windows is
already in place from each component using the Window menu to select the
active document to work in. 

Although I could envision a tabbed interface originating from the SC, and
even the possibly of optionally binding windows to optionally  be confined
within the frame of the running SC.   But implementation of tabbed viewing 
does not alone improve user experience.

LibreOffice is already something better.  The inport and export filters
implemented by LibreOffice for handling of MS binary .doc, RTF, OOXML, and
their ODF implmentations are already very good.  But they are constantly
being improved, and revised to accommodate Microsoft's strange
interpretation of standards.

No the JRE has never been an issue. Rather,  the JRE plug-in for Web
browsers and indiscriminate web usage remains problematic from a security
perspective.  Use of Java is a developer's choice, and where appropriate it
will remain in use. That said, project movement away from Java is an
individual developer and ESC  effort based on code maintainability and
performance of the code base--not a security issue.
