The overwrite-mode for text-entries should be completely removed from
the GUI. There should only be the insert-mode. The reasons why
overwrite-mode has a bad usability are found e.g. in the book "The
humane interface" by Jef Raskin. To only give 2 reasons:
1. The user always has to remember in which mode he is, because the
result is fundamental different. (Modeless design is always better and
in that case it's easy to offer modeless design.)
2. The production of text should not automatically delete other text.
The deletion of text should always be something that the user does in
full consciousness, that something is deleted. But not by accident
while producing other content.
For more information see the book mentioned above or other books about
usability.
