Hi Michel,

2012/5/29 Michel RENON <renon@mr-consultant.net>

Hi,

As I proposed during my last chat participation, here is another easy
design hack : a modification of Writer's Insert menu.
I find today's insert menu not very usefull : most used commands are
everywhere, beside unused commands.

Here is my proposal :
http://michel.renon.free.fr/**LibreOffice/propal_menu_**
insert_20120529.pdf<http://michel.renon.free.fr/LibreOffice/propal_menu_insert_20120529.pdf>

You can see that there is little work to implement :
- most menus are just moved
- few are new menus that links to existing commands
- just need to write 2 new commands (that are shorcuts to already
implemented feature : insert spreasheet and insert drawing)

If you find it interesting, I may propose the same for Calc, Impress and
Draw.

TBH, I prefer the current menu.

The proposed menu seems less logical than the current menu, categorized by
subjective usage rather than context. It's especially concerning that
"Picture..." and "Picture from Scan..." are separated and "Page Break" and
"Manual Break..." are separated. I'd also advise against an "Advanced"
submenu, as it makes finding commands even harder.

I'm also doubtful that the new order reflects the general usage. "LO
Spreadsheet", "LO Drawing", etc. are now featured quite prominently, yet,
from my own experience, these are used quite rarely.

I do like the idea of getting rid of the "Horizontal rule" dialog.

What might be a good step forward is if we have a "File..." item that would
allow the user to choose any type of file from his disk -- a picture, a
movie, some sound, an OLE object, ... iWork does something similar -- it
has a "Choose..." button [1]. This would allow us to consolidate "Insert
Picture...", "Movie and Sound...", and "File..." into a single button.
