Hola, parece que lo he solucionado; tras mucha búsqueda por la red he descargado de Oracle jre-6u21-linux-x64.bin y lo he instalado siguiendo las instrucciones de http://hardc0l2e.wordpress.com/2011/04/05/libreoffice-openoffice-base-slow/ y se me ha instalado la versión 1.6.0_21 del JRE con la que base vuelve a ser un tiro.
