LibO 5.3.1 on Mac mini (macOS Sierra)でも再現しました。
一方、OS X 10.10のMacBook AirやOS X 10.9のMacBook Proでは重くならない
ため、macOSのバージョンに依るのではないかと思います。
持ち合わせていたMacBook Proで検証してみたところ、
同じような動作になることを確認致しました。
LibreOfficeの再起動、他アプリケーションを終了した状態で検証した際にも、
同じ結果となりました。
Bugzillaも確認してみましたが、似たような報告が見当たりませんでした。
(調査不足かもしれませんが……)
バグ報告してみてはいかがでしょうか。
