There is a simple and fast way, with no registration required: IRC. Last 
year I had 350 private mentoring chats with 130 new people interested in 
contributing to C++ development, quality assurance, documentation and UX 
design.

It's more about putting in the work rather than what medium is used. 
When needed, I can switch to a conference call on our self-hosted Jitsi. 
The same place where I hold live streams of bug triaging most weeks and 
where anyone can join and ask questions.

We get so many contributors joining all the time that during peak season 
it is difficult for us to keep up (especially as certain deadlines call 
for more intense mentoring).

My experience with Discord is that it has an overwhelming UI, so I don't 
agree at all with your comparison to the forum. Also, Discord is 
proprietary and closed source just like Telegram (which was a mistake to 
set up).
