Next problem is that the Mac 4.4.1 RC2 langpacks appear to be unavailable from

That I can not reproduce.
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?type=mac-x86_64&version=4.4.1
has the "translated user interface" button with working download link
(

Ah, right, that “translated user interface” button is included in the page only if you pass an
appropriate Accept-Language header in the HTTP request (and doesn’t appear for an en-US setup).
And on <http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?version=4.4.1> the "LibreOffice in
other languages” link (at the right) erroneously links to
<http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?lang=pick>.
But even if you pass say “Accept-Language: de” when getting
<http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?version=4.4.1>, the then-appearing "need
another language?” linking to
<http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?type=mac-x86_64&version=4.4.1&lang=pick>
does not work properly: If you then click on “German” linking to
<http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?type=mac-x86_64&version=&lang=de> you are
back at 4.4.0, not 4.4.1 RC2.
