thanks a lot for your hint - seems some file system permission broke the 
captcha, which then decided to just not appear, instead of blocking 
registrations. Wonderful...

I've fixed the problem and deleted the spammy pages. If you could take 
care of blocking the users, that'd be wonderful! :)
