messages post and show as unread, but I can't read any of them as my
TBird keeps trying to connect. Yup, I have re-booted my box and
closed/re-started TBird and then stood on my head, but it still didn't
work.

No worry, GMane just came back to work just about 5 minutes ago. Not
sure what happened.
