Hi,
I wanted to share the current infra status quo with you. Sorry for being
so silent the last weeks. It was really urgent to get some stuff done,
so I first wanted to create some results before talking. ;-)
I spent quite some time now with updating our existing configuration.
Goals were:
- bring it from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04
- make it scriptable (poor man's deployment), as preparation for a real
deployment solution
- include some wishlist items and fix some bugs, plus enhance security
Right now, I achieved all of this with the base system plus the Postfix
setup, including spam and virus filtering. To move out of theory, I have
now updated all running VMs with this up to date configuration, so they
are now in a stable and sane state. Let's better not talk about what was
before, all of that was set up in a rush... ;-) Productive machines
benefitting from this change are AskBot and Gerrit, plus some testing
machines.
Next step is to move forward with the above steps for the web server
configuration, apply that to the virtual machines, and then start
migrating kermit, our web server, to our shiny new hardware, since all
we need is the documentation I should have by then.
I will poke site administrators individually when the migration will
take place. Some sites I can migrate on my own (like the wiki), but for
others it is good to have someone around wo "wears the hat", like
Christian for Silverstripe, since he's more in the know here than I am.
This should cure most of the ongoing issues with load, as kermit2 has
much more CPU power and RAM. Plus, it will save us some money when we
don't have to run kermit and kermit2 in parallel.
Next roadmap items after kermit has been migrated is to migrate bilbo,
our machine for downloads and mail(ing lists). This will be a bit more
tricky, since it requires many more components, but if I can move on at
the current speed, I hope it won't take too long. In parallel, I also
want to update some Ubuntu 11.10 machines that already have current
hardware to the new setup, which should be straightforward. Also in
parallel, Alex is putting all of the documentation into SaltStack (thank
you so much, Alex!), so we move towards real deployment as well.
I also plan to host a public admin call soon, but for the moment, I hope
the above helps in understanding where we stand and what's up for the
future.
As to virtualization of all services, this is something to look into
after all of the above has been done, and won't be a topic before summer
or even later.
Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. :-)
Florian
