It's would be better if site detects local settings of the visitor browser and switches
automatically to his language. I don't know,
but probably this will work in SilverStripe if we use translations feature.

I thought about that too.

To use this feature or not was a very basical decision right in the
beginning after we set up the site. We tried it for a while but the
majority did not like it.
Using it would mean to force the structure and content of localized
sites to be cloned from the main site, translating it page by page.

There were neither the teams ready nor a consensus to be found on that.
Furthermore it places kind of a disturbing sub-navigation with lots of
language links on top of the pages where translations are available.

AFAIK it's not possible to use the feature just for some subsites for it
is a systemwide config.

I'm not saying that all this is carved in stone - it isn't, it just
points to the fact that we're still 'building' a website-team as well as
a website.
Unfortunately there's actually nobody available who would be able to
maintain 'all' features of Silverstripe *continously* and would have the
coder skills necessary for a decent configuration.

We provide a VM at our testserver where any changes to Silverstripe may
be tested freely, pls ping webmaster@documentfoundation.org for the
credentials.

|
| We've discussed this topic some time ago but didn't go for it for the
| reason that there are rarely 'translations' of the main site available,
| but mainly 'some' localized content which occasionally would not show
| the visitor all the desired information.
|
| A dropdown would give the impression of one could expect translations
| which would be disappointed quite often.
|
| Subsites are created as any team wishes and sometimes the 'team' is just
| one person maintaining it from time to time.
| In case you see a more inspired solution to the international sites list
| just don't hesitate to come up with ;)

Cheers
Erich
