I don't see the need. If you are in edit mode it's unlikely and not recommended
to click somewhere. But in fact you can click the text anywhere on overlapping
text boxes without switching to another object. If you are outside you want to
find the text box on top.

Let's turn the question into its basic scenario: How do I enter the edit mode
on overlapping objects? And the answer is to use the Navigator. Or use
tab/ctrl+tab to traverse through the object list. And there is the hidden gem
alt+click.
