So it's the descenders clashing with the underline you mean (for example
discussed here

known in CSS as text-decoration-skip-ink
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/text-decoration-skip-ink). If
so, it's not a style but a special function that removes the underline from
characters with descenders or maybe some property of the font (not sure that
something like underline thickness of zero works).
