The simplest procedure would be just to include Default in the custom styles
list when Custom is chosen.

Why don't you create a custom default style?

I think it would be of no
inconvenience to anyone to show it and of immense benefit.

I think, there will be bug reports and discussion about it. Same, if it is part
of applied styles, but not applied.

So I won't support that idea, but let's ask and decide design-team.
