Changing text outside the selection contradicts our effort. So I wouldn't
touch "smith".
The cycling ALREADY changes text outside the selection. That's the problem (or
one of them). That step I was suggesting merely /reverts/ that change when
sentence case is not required. (And it wasn't just Smith; it was also Jones.)
