I understand the problem of increase the area; fine with me. But why is
there a table column selection option when dragging by holding the left
click in the left margin (between -2 and -1 in the ruler) and for the right
side (between 17,5 and 19 cm)
Not sure to understand you right. But what you actually do far away from the
document content is to move the cursor. And like clicking somewhere in the
paragraph and moving the mouse down you make a selection. I don't see a
confusion.
