It sucks now because nothing is retained. But that will get fixed, and then what? Moving beyond
current implementation is better served by keeping things flexible--not by locking it down.
So basically you're advocating to keep the broken UI, because you hope it might
be useful when things are more customizable. The current default UI without any
user customizations is broken. This should be fixed now.
How you imagine a future UI may or may not work, it not relevant to this issue.
Let's discuss that in a separate bug report.
