What if LibreOffice is started maximized or in an environment where it would be
better if LibreOffice did not try to enforce a maximum window width (such as
tiling window managers)?

One way to cope better with this would be to either have only a sidebar and
then a blank space on the right (perhaps this is the easier to implement?).
Another way would be to center the options, instead of making a tall sidebar.
Something like the old start screen.
