To second Jay's reasoning: We asked users [1] about the preferred method to
change the text highlight color and paragraph background color. Most people
responded that they use the toolbar buttons (n=185, 78%), followed by users who
change it through the context menu (n=16, 7%), then users who change it through
styles (n=16, 7%). From another survey about Calc [2] we know that styles are
not known at all for 25% of the users.
If we force them to use styles instead of direct formatting we loose the casual
user who does not care about large documents or consistent layout (which
requires the usage of styles).
