How about just changing the behavior to paste an object without replacing the
selected object, as most other editors* do?
(Text behavior is different, as there it's standard to replace the selected
text with pasted text.)
* Tested Microsoft Word 2007, iWork Pages, Google Drive, Calligra Words, and
Inkscape.
