I believe the same functionality can be achieve via database

So, I don't see a reason why we need to keep this as a separate data
source category.
IMHO the advantage of the data provider is that the actual data does not
have to reside in the spreadsheet, allowing for massive amounts of data
records but providing only the information necessary for the pivot
table. This maybe could be accomplished as well using a registered data
source, but currently we have no means to pull the data without actually
storing it in the spreadsheet for further processing. Or isn't that the
case?
Naively, I don't immediately see why when using database connectivity,
you'd have to store the data in the spreadsheet?
In enterprises environments, custom database queries in ERP systems
costs a fortune to get (e.g. Accenture man/hour price list) and are
almost never done timely. Managers use just 2 tools: Spreadsheets and
Presentations. The first to get data to report, the second, to make his
personal show for the boss and peers.
So managers use spreadsheets from whatever query they get from IT and
shuffles it for the show. That means almost always large CSV files
(often hideen behind a .xls extension).
Also, direct database connection is a privilege very few people have in
enterprises.
I hope it helps
