I'm for it. Double clicking seems really unintuitive and rather
undiscoverable to me. Some other apps do the same – I know that eg the
CAD software Catia does, but in Catia the double clicked icon turns
orange to show it is in a special mode which is a bit better than
LibreOffice's current behaviour.
I was wondering if (since users tend to get stuck in this mode), having
'Escape' escape from the mode back to normal 'selection' would be a
helpful addition to make it more acceptable.
This sounds good, but additionally this should work by clicking the
same icon again (I'd guess most users won't click on the little mouse
cursor icon first).
